Jeanette Amavisca has served on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education since 1981.  During this time 42 schools have been built.  Jeanette has served on a variety of board committees, including the Audit Committee, Architect Committee, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Advisory Committee, School Safety Task Force and Recreation Summit.

Always committed to providing a quality education for every child, Jeanette continues to be an advocate of technical education, alternative high schools, special education and special needs students.  An individual thinker, her intense dedication to these areas of education has supported the implementation of many new programs. Jeanette actively participates in the Healthy Start ChildSpree, as well as other Healthy Start programs.  An advocate for ALL students, Jeanette has focused on equality in education and providing students with the necessary tools to be successful in school.

While serving as a board member, Jeanette has been a part of the Sacramento County School Board Association Executive Committee and has been a member of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) Delegate Assembly for over 15 years. While involved with CSBA, Jeanette has been a member of the Legislative Network, Nomination Committee, Elections Committee, Schools and Media Crisis Communication Task Force, Annual Conference Committee, Pre-School Champions, Golden Bell Award Evaluator and Construction Management Task Force.

Jeanette has overseen much change during her years with Elk Grove Unified and has ensured that student needs remain at the forefront of this change.  A safe environment for students and staff remains of the highest priority as pivotal decisions are made regarding the district’s future.  Jeanette has taken particular interest in promoting the literacy and proficiency of high school graduates.  During her years as a board member, 95% of high school seniors passed the high school exit exam.  Additionally, Jeanette has played an instrumental role in bringing STARBASE curriculum to EGUSD elementary schools, expanding pre-school programs at Title I schools district wide, championing the JUMP START program to help elementary school students transition to the middle school environment and promoting ROP academies in secondary education (preparing students for the workforce).  Under Jeanette’s leadership and aptitude for making tough decisions, EGUSD now boasts one of the lowest dropout rates in the State of California.

A Sacramento Valley native, Jeanette attended local schools. While in college, she majored in accounting. Jeanette worked for the State Board of Equalization for over 20 years as a senior tax auditor. While working for the Board of Equalization, Jeanette served on a number of committees, including the Enterprise Modeling Team, Women’s Advisory Committee, Charitable Activities Council, United Way Task Force on Violence Prevention and chaired/vice-chaired the United Way Campaign.

Widely acknowledged as one of the top Pre K-12 school districts in California, Jeanette has overseen the shifting needs within the Elk Grove Unified School District.  Her 28 years of leadership have played a vital role in facilitating the implementation of quality early education.  Jeanette continues to promote community programs by actively volunteering for organizations such as:  Project RIDE (exposing disabled students to the equestrian world), Healthy Start and multiple fundraisers for schools and educational projects.  She is regularly invited to share successful strategies at California State Board Association conferences.  With her experience as a senior tax auditor, Jeanette’s leadership continues to play a critical role as EGUSD faces the nationwide, statewide and local budgetary crisis.

Jeanette has a daughter and granddaughter who are graduates from EGUSD.  Her great grandson currently attends elementary school in EGUSD.  One of her goddaughters attends an EGUSD high school and her other God daughter is a graduate of EGUSD, currently attending college.
