The Elk Grove Unified School District is preparing to celebrate!  The 2008-2009 school year will mark 50 years of educating the youth of this community.

In honor of this 50 year anniversary, the district will celebrate with a number of activities throughout the school year.   The theme for these celebrations will be “EGUSD Goes Gold – Celebrating 50 Years of Educational Excellence.”

The district was unified on July 1, 1959. During the 1959-1960 school year the district served 3,823 students in eight elementary schools and one high school.  Since that time the district has grown into the 5th largest school district in California and the largest in Northern California.  Today the district serves more than 62,000 students in 62 schools.

The community is invited to help select a logo to commemorate this occasion. Click here to vote on one of five logos designed by EGUSD Web Specialist Kathleen Watt. The voting closes on July 18.  The winning logo will be unveiled at the August 19 Board of Education meeting.

The logo contest is housed on a special 50th Anniversary website.  The website also contains information about the district’s history and the events that will be held throughout the year.

In addition, EGUSD students and staff are working on documentary about the district’s 50 years of education.  The documentary will be shown at board meetings and be housed on the district’s 50th Anniversary website.

The official launch of the celebration will take place at a Board of Education meeting on August 19, 2008.  Some of the activities that will follow include district-wide contests, time capsules, fun run, history month, talent shows and a picnic in the park. Schools will also be provided with curriculum resources that teachers can use to integrate EGUSD area history into California history lessons.

Please know that these events will be paid for through contributions from alumni and community groups and organizations. Some of the events are also fundraisers.  The proceeds will go towards scholarships for our students.

If you would like more information about this celebration, please contact the EGUSD Communications Department at 686-7732 or at communication@egusd.net.
