Winners of the 2011/2012 No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contest
For the sixth year in a row, students from across the district demonstrated their artistic talents through the No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contest. The poster contest asked students to illustrate 12 rhymes describing the importance of going to school – every day. The illustrated rhymes will be printed as posters to promote strong attendance throughout the district.
The winners of the 2011/2012 No Excuses – Go to School Poster Contest will be recognized at the EGUSD Board of Education meeting on December 6, 2011. The winning students and their posters are listed below:

The No Excuses – Go to School attendance campaign focuses on the theme of “responsibility” to promote the importance of consistent school attendance, which is an important factor in academic success. Students with regular attendance are often more engaged in school and fair better academically. Attendance is also important for the school district. Every day that a student is absent from school, the district loses $33 per student in state funding.
Last year, the 2010-2011 No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign contributed to an increase in attendance of .38 percent, which equates to an additional $1.4 million in funding for the district through average daily attendance (ADA).
The program uses an outreach approach to parents and community members through school newsletter articles, press releases, letters home, posters, flyers and incentive contests. The campaign consists of a number of events and contests. Elementary, middle and high school students with perfect attendance for a calendar month are eligible to receive recognition through the district’s incentive program. Each month, one student with perfect attendance at each campus throughout Elk Grove Unified is randomly chosen to receive a prize. These prizes are donated by local businesses.
At the elementary school level, students at each elementary school in the district have the chance to win a new bicycle and helmet at the end of the school year. This year, the Elementary School Bike Giveaway is sponsored in part by Methodist Hospital and the Cosumnes Community Services District. Each month a student has perfect attendance, they earn one entry in the drawing for the bike. The more entries they earn, the more chances they have to win the bicycle and helmet. One bike and one helmet will be given to one elementary student with at least one month of perfect attendance at each elementary school at the end of the school year.
Middle school and high school students in grades 9-11 now have a new grand prize opportunity. The Middle/High School Laptop Giveaway gives students the chance to win a new laptop computer and printer at the end of the school year. Similar to the bike giveaway, students earn entries for each month of perfect attendance. At the end of the school year, one student from each middle and high school in the district will be selected to attend the Grand Finale Event at the district office. One laptop computer and printer each will be awarded to one middle and one high school student selected at the Grand Finale Event.
Back for an unprecedented sixth year, the Class of 2012 will have the chance to participate in the Elk Grove Auto Mall 2011/2012 Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive. This popular contest is a special incentive to encourage consistent school attendance in the district’s senior class. The Elk Grove Auto Mall has once again graciously donated $20,000 towards the purchase of a vehicle from one of their dealerships for a graduating senior with at least five months of perfect attendance in all classes and at least a 2.0 GPA. The five months of perfect attendance do not have to be consecutive. On May 4, 2012, one finalist will be selected from each of the district’s nine comprehensive high schools and one finalist will be selected to represent Calvine, William Daylor and Rio Cazadero high schools at the Grand Finale Event at the Elk Grove Auto Mall.
