Attendance Improvement Office
The Attendance Improvement Office (AIO) was formed by the Elk Grove Unified School District in 2015 with the desired intent to monitor and improve the attendance of all students within the district.
The AIO has evolved from the original “pilot program” that covered just four regions for the first few years to know covering the entire district including all schools across the district. The AIO staff utilizes a number of different researched – based interventions that are designed to improve attendance and offer support in identified areas that may be impacting attendance.
The interventions may include documented student and parent communication by site staff, automated attendance letters, automated phone message and/or texts, parent communication by AIO staff, Student Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting, Partners Against Chronic Truancy (PACT) meetings, home visit from law enforcement, Student Attendance Review Board (SARB), and Truancy Court through the Sacramento County Juvenile Court System. AIO regularly includes the regional SAFE Centers, district nurses, Foster Youth Services, drug and alcohol resources, and teen pregnancy services, EGUSD SEL Resources, and other non-profit community-based counseling services to assist with a variety of needs that may impact our students and their attendance.
School Attendance Review Board (SARB)
School Attendance Review Board (SARB) was established by the California legislature in 1975 for the purposes of maintaining a better effort to meet the needs of students with attendance and/or behavior problems and promoting the use of alternatives to the juvenile court system. SARB seeks to understand why students are experiencing attendance and/or behavior problems, and serves as a vehicle to correct those problems when existing school and community resources have been exhausted. SARB is specifically charged with funding solutions to unresolved student attendance and discipline problems by bringing together, on a regular basis, representatives of the multiple agencies such as Healthy Start Family Resource Centers, Foster Youth Services, and representatives from the Department of Human Assistance, Child Protective Services, the County Office of Education, Probation and other law enforcement agencies, such as Sheriffs, Police and the District Attorney’s Office.
