Foster Youth

The Elk Grove Unified School District’s Foster Youth Services (FYS) Program strives to address the unique educational needs of youth in foster care by working collaboratively with youth, caregivers, schools, placement agencies, and other service providers. FYS aims to support student achievement by providing access, stability, and guidance through a variety of services:

Enrollment Support Services
FYS staff complete educational passports to assist with immediate enrollment and timely transfer of school records for current and prior EGUSD students. Student transcripts are reviewed to ensure full and partial credits are awarded and eligibility for graduation exemptions are determined.

Educational Case Management
FYS Individual Case Managers (ICMs) work with students and their support team to provide individual and group interventions based on the students’ Educational Success Plan. Services include:

  • Assessing student needs and developing an Educational Success Plan based on individual needs
  • Connecting youth to school and community resources
  • Facilitating communication and collaboration with caregivers, school staff, and social workers/probation officers
  • Troubleshooting school-related issues
  • Participating in collaborative team meetings

Academic Enhancement
FYS provides weekly individualized tutoring to EGUSD students in foster care. Priority is given to youth performing below grade level and youth unable to access other tutoring programs.

Independent Living Program
To support the transition into adulthood, FYS helps prepare students in foster care between the ages of 16 to 19 for independent living by teaching self-sufficiency skills, providing employment readiness skills, as well as developing school completion plans and post-secondary support. Students may participate in:

  • Independent living skills classes
  • College tours
  • Individual case management
  • Job shadow days

Professional Development
FYS staff and community partners are available to provide training for school site staff, caregivers, service providers, and others on topics related to the educational needs of students in foster care, including related laws and trauma-informed practices.
