Safety Information

Safety is always a top priority at the Elk Grove Unified School District. The district emphasizes keeping students safe at school through strict behavior standards, closed campuses, school resource officers, campus supervisors, and activities that keep students participating in school. Below you will find some of the things EGUSD does to keep students safe:

EGUSD Air Quality Index Guidelines

EGUSD Incident Reporting System

The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) online Incident Reporting System offers students, parents and community members a web accessible method to report incidents of bullying, discrimination and/or harassment, harm to school and/or property or harm to self. The Incident Reporting System can be accessed from anywhere online through a unique link located on every school’s website. For emergencies and/or urgent situations requiring immediate help, people will still be encouraged to call 911 or contact EGUSD’s Safety and Security office at (916) 686-7786.

When making an online report in the new Incident Reporting System, it will not be necessary to enter one’s name or identity, however, there is an option to provide identification and contact information in order to communicate with the Incident Response Team. Photos and links to video can be submitted with a report.
The types of issues that can be reported through the online Incident Reporting System are:

  • Bullying – Bullying includes verbal, non-verbal, physical or emotional acts against another student either in person, via electronic device or online.
  • Damage or Harm to School or Property – Damage or harm to school property includes intentional destruction to the school or school property in a harmful or malicious manner.
  • Discrimination or Harassment – Discrimination or harassment includes acts against another person on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, age, or personal beliefs either in person, via electronic device or online.
  • Harm to Self or Others – Harm includes intent or desire to injure yourself or others.

Incident reports made on the Incident Reporting System are received by administration when they are submitted and reports are reviewed as soon as possible. All reports are taken seriously and are acted upon in a timely manner. As each incident is different, each will warrant a different reaction and timeline for action and can be as thorough as the information provided.

The Elk Grove Unified School District is committed to providing a safe, secure and healthy environment that allows every Student to be learning in every classroom, in every subject, every day. The district believes that students and staff have the right to be free of bullying, threats, intimidation and harassment while on our campuses or participating in or being associated with any school/district related activity. In Elk Grove Unified, the community is encouraged that “if you see something, or know something, to say something.”

The Elk Grove Unified School District encourages the reporting of crimes and suspicious activities. Through the WeTip program, our community can make anonymous reports through 24-hour hotlines. If you or your child wants to report a crime or suspicious circumstance, call the toll-free number, 1 (800) 78-CRIME. If you see something or know something, say something.

You can also make reports by calling EGUSD’s Safety and Security Department at (916) 686-7786 or the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department at (916) 874-5115.

Drug and Weapon Prevention

The Elk Grove Unified School District partners with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and Elk Grove Police Department to deploy canine officers trained to detect drugs and weapons. The dogs are used randomly in the common areas of high schools. They do not search individual students. When deemed necessary, the district also employs undercover officers to address the sale of narcotics at schools.

Emergency Lockdown Procedure

The Elk Grove Unified School District has emergency plans and procedures in place for various situations, including lockdowns, and schools routinely conduct emergency drills to make sure that everyone is prepared in the event of an actual emergency situation. It is important for parents to be knowledgeable of these procedures and to know what occurs during lockdown situations. To get a general overview, we have created a list of frequently asked questions relating to lockdowns.

Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety

The Elk Grove Unified School District prepares students to use the most up-to date technology and learning tools. Just as we want students to be safe at school, it is imperative that we keep our students safe on the Internet. In response to the speed at which technology changes, bringing with it new opportunities and challenges, EGUSD developed a comprehensive Digital Citizenship website to provide updated digital citizenship news and resources to EGUSD staff, students and parents.

The Elk Grove Unified School District received recognition as a Common Sense District for the 2017-2018 school year. EGUSD is one of seven school districts in California and the largest in Northern California to earn certification. Being a Common Sense District is an official stamp of recognition from Common Sense Education. Earning recognition as a Common Sense District shows we are dedicated to redefining the way students interact with technology and helping them harness the full power of technology for learning.

The internet opens a world of possibilities for children. The information highway offers children many opportunities for learning, constructive entertainment, and personal growth. At the same time, parents need to know about the risks their children face online and how their children can use the internet safely. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about internet use and to know what their children are doing on the internet.

Law Enforcement Partnerships

The district has a Safety and Security Department, overseen by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Central Division. The Safety and Security Department also works closely with the Elk Grove Police and Sacramento Police departments. Each comprehensive high school has an assigned Sheriff’s deputy as a School Resource Officer (SRO). The SRO works with site staff to enforce laws and to mentor and educate the district’s youth. Additional officers are dedicated to assist at elementary and middle schools.

Parent Notification

In the event that an emergency takes place on a school campus, student safety is our top concern. Depending on the level of the emergency, parents will be notified by telephone call or a letter home. Please make certain that your child’s school has your most current emergency contact information.

Safe Routes to School Logo
The District’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program supports staff, parents and students in their efforts to increase safe walking and biking at individual school sites. EGUSD has promoted SRTS since 2002. Today, all EGUSD elementary schools celebrate Walk to School Day on the first Wednesday in October each year. Many other schools organize SRTS programs throughout the year like walking school buses, remote drop-off, bike rodeos, and bike helmet safety education.

Safety Tips to and from School

There are several precautionary safety measures parents and students can take as they go to and from school. Talk to your children about the following safety measures:
  1. Do not talk to strangers, even if they know your name.
  2. Always walk directly to and from school using the same path everyday.
  3. Always walk or ride your bike with a group of friends.
  4. Run directly to school or home if you are approached by a stranger.
  5. Immediately notify a school official or parent.

School Safety Plan

Each year schools are required by law to update a school safety plan by March 1. The plan includes earthquake emergency procedures and a disaster policy for buildings with a capacity of 50 or more people. Schools must report on the status of the safety plan to numerous community leaders. In addition, a description of the safety plan’s key elements must be detailed in the school accountability report card.  [E.C. 32286, 32288]

To assist law enforcement officers and public safety personnel, each school site is equipped with a “Crisis Response Box” that includes site emergency plans.

Student and Staff Safety Top Priority

In Elk Grove Unified schools, student and staff safety is the top priority. Behavior that leads to serious physical injury, including possession of weapons on campus, or the selling or furnishing of drugs to others will not be tolerated. All three of these actions may result in a recommendation for expulsion from the school district and possible arrest. Teachers and administrators work diligently to inform students about expected behaviors to ensure the safety of all at every school site.

Traffic Safety

The Elk Grove Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the Elk Grove Unified Safety and Security Department would like to remind residents that traffic safety around schools is a collaborative effort. Drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to obey the rules of the road around local schools to ensure safety.
