Superintendent's Message
December 13, 2022
Dear Elk Grove Unified Parents and Families,
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller
Working together and staying engaged and informed about cultural and societal issues is important to me both as a person and as a former social science teacher. Through our district’s work in family and community engagement, we continually learn about the hardships and trauma that many of our newcomer students and families face before coming to California. Many families have expressed how grateful they are that Elk Grove Unified is a safe and welcoming place where their children can peacefully attend school and create new friendships. Being safe and feeling welcomed is what I want all our EGUSD students and families to feel and experience.
Over the summer we began to reinvest in the relationships we had built between students, families and staff before a global pandemic was thrust upon us. Our preservice focused on professional development for school staff dedicated to building relationships within each school’s unique culture and climate, and many of our incredible teachers and counselors conducted over 5,000 positive relationship building home visits. In January, we will continue to learn and grow together as we plan to extend the effort we began in pre-service. Starting in January, all Elk Grove Unified staff will begin professional learning focused on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. The training includes a number of modules that every employee will complete. The goal is to provide a common language, knowledge, and experience that promotes an equitable culture to further the success of all students in EGUSD. As I often say, we are committed to improving outcomes for our students and the only way I know how to do this is if we, the adults, continue to learn, grow and get better at the work we do. This commitment to training for all EGUSD staff is an example of our commitment to improving student outcomes through the professional development of our employees.
This is also a very important time for our seniors as they wrap up their first semester courses. Many colleges and universities use grades from the first semester of the senior year when finalizing acceptance decisions. It is important that students keep their focus through the end of the semester. I am so proud of all the hard work our seniors are putting in as they come closer to the end of their time with us in EGUSD. I know that the hard work will continue through their final semester and beyond their time in Elk Grove Unified.
Finally, I hope that we all remain mindful that while the winter break is typically a time of festivity, friends and family gatherings, there are many among us who may be silently suffering and in need of assistance. Please know you are not alone. If you know of an individual or family who needs some gentle support, please contact our Student Support and Health Services Department or community resources website. Remember, together we can do so much.
During this time of year there are so many reasons to be thankful and so many exciting possibilities to look forward to. Please enjoy the following two short videos reflecting on this past year and looking at what we want to accomplish in the future.
Take care of yourself and your loved ones, and don’t hesitate to seek us out should you need our support.
Sincerely,
Christopher R. Hoffman
