Student Programs

Ensuring access to learning choices remains a steadfast priority for Elk Grove Unified and new prerequisites, registration enrollment and selection criteria are reviewed regularly to equitably and collaboratively engage more students and their families to access rigorous instruction with support for intellectual, social and emotional needs. We encourage students and families to explore the variety of program opportunities available district wide and to contact their school site about accessing these programs that are provided through our Education Services Division.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

The AVID Program is a four-year college preparatory class for underrepresented students who demonstrate academic potential. Offered at all comprehensive high schools, the goals of the program are to provide academic instruction and other support to students to prepare them for four-year college and university eligibility, give students college-level entry skills, and motivate them to pursue a college education. Students must apply to participate in the AVID program through an application which may be obtained by contacting the AVID coordinator at each school site.

Character Education/Unity

Elk Grove Unified recognizes the importance of incorporating character education into a student’s curriculum. Character education helps teach students how to understand, appreciate and internalize positive character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship, civic virtue, honesty and personal responsibility.

Unity

At Elk Grove Unified, we are proud of our diversity.  We celebrate our diversity through numerous programs, activities and events designed to promote unity throughout our district. We provide our 7-12 schools with many leadership programs, such as Link Crew that trains members of the junior and senior classes to be Link Leaders who are seen as positive role models to motivate, lead, teach and guide freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful in high school.

We also care about school climate and provide the Safe School Ambassadors Program and Conflict Management where students receive training in critical skills, such as observation, communication, deflection, distraction, negotiation and referral. They are trained to notice negative behaviors and intervene and stop them before they escalate into more harmful forms of violence and create a sense of fear on campus. Safe School Ambassadors model tolerance and respect in their own interaction and are seen as role models for their peers. Many middle and high schools train conflict managers to assist in solving conflicts among their peers. Conflict managers assist in dispute resolution and facilitate activities throughout the school year to promote unity.

To celebrate the cultural diversity of our students, we also provide Multicultural Assemblies all grade levels to raise awareness of the many cultures and ethnicities represented in Elk Grove Unified.

Community College Concurrent Courses

Opportunities may be available for qualifying students to enroll in college courses that may be offered on the high school campus or at individual colleges. Students need to contact their counselors for more information and gain prior approval for concurrent enrollment from the school principal.

English Learners (EL)

The goal of the Elk Grove Unified School District is to prepare all students for success in college, career and life experience after high school graduation. To support the unique needs of English learners (EL) toward this goal,  English Language Development (ELD) instruction is provided to all EL students attending school in EGUSD. The focus of the instruction is on language acquisition through the use of the CA English Language Development Standards and research-based instructional strategies proven to be successful with students who are still acquiring English.  While developing fluent English language skills, all EL students receive instructional support in learning the core content of their particular grade level. Parents or students who would like more information regarding their school’s ELD program may contact their school administrative office.

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

GATE provides extra services to identified GATE students. The GATE program is designed to serve students who have been referred by teachers or parents and are found to be eligible because of: 1) high achievement; 2) leadership ability; 3) creative ability; 4) talent in visual and performing arts; 5) intellectual development; or 6) specific area achievement. Participation in GATE programs is voluntary for identified GATE students. Contact a counselor for additional information.

Harriet Eddy International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement—essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. The MYP is flexible enough to accommodate most national or local curriculum requirements. It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP).

Honors/Advanced Placement Classes/International Baccalaureate Programme

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a cooperative educational endeavor of the College Board and high schools. Based on the fact that many young people can complete college-level studies in their secondary schools, it represents a desire of schools and colleges to foster such experiences. Advanced Placement serves three groups: students who wish to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school, schools that desire to offer these opportunities, and colleges that wish to encourage and recognize such achievement. Students will be notified about the honors/AP application process and timeline during the course registration process. For more information please visit collegeboard.com/apstudents.

Laguna Creek High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous, challenging and balanced two-year university-preparation programme for students aged 16 to 19. It aims to support schools by providing outstanding research-based education, developing both disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding. The DP is a truly international programme developed in consultation and collaboration with educators from around the world. It incorporates the best educational practices from different systems while remaining free of influence of any particular one. At its heart, the DP is driven by the IB mission to create a better world through education. DP students are prepared for participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society as they develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and ethically, while acquiring the skills that will prepare them for further education and life in the 21st century.
