In Elk Grove Unified School District, every student plays a unique role and has a promising future in our community. Our 'You Belong Here' campaign is a testament to the value of showing up, not just for class, but for every opportunity to learn and grow. Regular attendance is more than just being present; it's about actively participating in a shared journey towards success, where your engagement and involvement are key.

When you attend school regularly, you're setting yourself up for academic achievement, building essential life skills, and strengthening your sense of belonging. Each day you're here, you engage in meaningful lessons, collaborate with peers, and receive support from teachers who are invested in your progress. This sense of belonging is what makes our community supportive and connected. Consistent attendance helps you stay on track with your studies, reduces stress, and builds confidence.

Remember, every day you come to school, you contribute to a vibrant, supportive community where you matter. Your presence in class not only enriches the learning experience for your peers but also fosters a sense of unity and belonging. Together, we can create a learning environment where everyone thrives. So, let's make the most of every school day—because you belong here, and your presence makes all the difference.

Join us, parents and educators, in making each day count! Your support and encouragement play a crucial role in ensuring students attend school regularly and actively participate in the learning process.

Attendance Recovery

Attendance Recovery

Attendance recovery programs provide students with structured opportunities to recover missed instructional time and can contribute to improved academic and attendance outcomes.

What is Attendance Recovery?

“Attendance Recovery (AR) allows districts the option to offer more opportunities to increase student access to instruction and recover funding dependent on average daily attendance.” - California Department of Education

Attendance Recovery was created by new Education Code sections 46210-46211.  Attendance Recovery is not a replacement for instruction during the regular school day and does not change a student’s attendance record. AR is designed to provide additional standards-aligned instruction that supports student engagement and performance. Attendance recovery is offered outside of the regular school day through before and after school, intersession, Saturday, or summer sessions.

Can Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students participate in Attendance Recovery (AR) beyond the statutory four-hour limit on their school day?

Yes. Senate Bill 153 amended EC Section 46111 to allow TK and Kindergarten student participation in AR programs, along with Expanded Learning Opportunity Programs.

Do absences that a student makes up in Attendance Recovery (AR) affect their truancy status?

No. Participation in AR does not remove an absence from the attendance register and does not remove a local educational agency’s obligation to meet the requirements of compulsory education law under EC sections 48260-48273. A truant student continues to be defined as a student who has been absent or missed more than 30 minutes of class without a valid excuse three times in a school year.

When might my student participate in Attendance Recovery?

Attendance Recovery is designed to provide multiple opportunities for students to participate during the school year. AR sessions are scheduled to be offered every term and may include before and/or after school, summer, intersession at year-round elementary sites, and/or Saturday sessions at some secondary schools.  For more detailed information about your school site’s offerings, please contact the school site or check the school webpage.

Why should invited students consider participating in Attendance Recovery?

Attendance Recovery is designed to engage students in educational activities and content aligned to grade-level standards. AR is taught by credentialed teachers and provides additional in-person instructional time outside of the regular school day.  By participating in AR, students will have opportunities to connect with teachers, deepen their understanding and knowledge, explore new learning opportunities, and participate in programs that benefit students and the district.
Frequently Asked Questions about Attendance Recovery

Frequently Asked Questions about Attendance Recovery

My student has not yet missed any school. Are they still eligible to participate in Attendance Recovery?

Yes, all students may participate in AR for up to 40 hours per school year.

Is my student required to participate in Attendance Recovery?

No.  Attendance Recovery is optional.

Can my student participate in Attendance Recovery during the school day?

No.  Attendance Recovery must be offered outside of the regular school day. This may include before and after school, during intersession, on Saturdays, or during the summer.

If my student attends AR, will it remove an absence from their record?

Attendance Recovery does not change a student’s attendance record, but it does contribute to the district’s overall attendance reporting which provides funding for programs and staff.  Participate in AR will benefit students by providing additional opportunities to work with teachers and receive grade level instruction, but it does not excuse a student from missed assignments. AR may be an extension of classroom instruction or may focus on a different area of academic enrichment, but is not designed to replace regular day instruction.
