Sean Yang
Sean J. Yang ran for election to the Elk Grove Unified Board of Education and won in the general election on November 3, 2020 to be elected to the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education to represent Trustee Area 3. On December 15, 2020, the Board of Trustees selected Mr. Yang to also serve as the EGUSD Board Representative to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Mr. Yang was also appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom on January 25, 2021 to the California State Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board that runs from Reddy through Sacramento to Bakersfield.

Inspired to be part of the solution in educating and preparing students for college, career and life, Mr. Yang’s top public education priorities include returning students to a safe school environment, ensuring the overall safety in our schools and establishing a curriculum that is easily accessible, relevant and culturally appropriate.

Sean is a refugee from Thailand and he and his nine siblings were raised by their father who was a Vietnam War veteran and their mother who was a small business owner. As Sean’s first teachers, his parents impressed upon him the importance of hard work, community service and the value of a public education. Grateful to the many public school teachers who helped him achieve the American Dream, Yang hopes to champion student access to high quality education and inspire youth in his community to dream big and believes that students need to be educated in the areas of leadership, public speaking, financial literacy, cultural competency, civic engagement and public affairs.

Mr. Yang, his wife and four children, three of which are Elk Grove Unified students, enjoy giving back to the local community. As a graduate of Valley High School, Mr. Yang holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology and received an Executive Master’s of Business Degree at Fresno State University. He currently works as a Medical Engineer at Kaiser Permanente and serves as the Regional Chair for the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), overseeing 7 chapters including the Sacramento and Elk Grove chapters. Through his community service and leadership, he works to inspire, engage and empower the community. Yang looks forward to furthering student leadership programs, mentoring and organizing community forums, town halls, diversity celebrations and being involved in his local area school events.
